Third British skier has been killed in avalanches in French Alps in the space of a week

A third British man has died while skiing in the French Alps in less than a week.

He had been skiing with a group of four others when the avalanche struck near the town of La Grave in the Alps on Tuesday morning, local media reported.

Mountain rescuers attended the scene, but the Briton, in his 30s, and a Polish citizen were pronounced dead.

The tragedy comes just days after two British men were among three people killed in an avalanche in the Val d'Isere ski resort on Friday morning.

On 17 February, an avalanche warning was issued for the Northern Alps and the Hautes-Alpes, which includes La Grave, by Meteo-France, the country's national weather service.

The avalanche risk remained high the following day, as sunshine was forecast, leading to thawing ice.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in France and are in contact with the local authorities".

The latest deaths bring the toll to 28 for this winter season at the popular skiing destination.

Last week two British men, Stuart Leslie and Shaun Overy, were among three people killed in the snow slide at Val d'Isere, a village in southeastern France. The other victim was a French national.
