Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith make history at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham

Amy Hunt has won a record fourth gold medal at a single European Athletics Championships after Great Britain and Northern Ireland won the Mixed 4x100m relay.

Hunt won the race alongside Dina Asher-Smith, Zharnel Hughes and Jeremiah Azu, while Georgia Hunter Bell continued Great Britain's stunning performance on the track, taking the women's 1500m on Sunday evening.

Hunt had already taken gold in the women's 4x100m relay, the 100m and 200m races in Birmingham. It's the first time any athlete has taken four titles in a single championships.

The closest anyone has come before was legendary Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen, with three gold medals and relay silver back in 1950.

Among British athletes, John Regis won four medals in 1990 - two golds plus a silver and a bronze.

Dina Asher-Smith, who ran the second leg, set an outright championship record, taking her eighth gold and 11th medal in all.

The British quartet set a European record, with a time fractionally under 40 seconds, finishing ahead of Germany, with Spain in third.

'Over the moon'

Amy Hunt told BBC Sport she was "over the moon", saying she had finished off the championships with "some of my best friends in the sport.

"Me and Jeremiah have the same birthday, so we're kind of twins. To do it all together is incredible."

It was the first time the event had featured at the games, and Hunt said that made it more satisfying.

She said: "The first time we did that changeover was an hour ago in warm-ups. Look how smooth it was. Such professionals. When you're queuing for a roller-coaster, and you're seeing the drops, but when you get off you want to do it all again. I loved it."

Asher-Smith 'absolutely terrified'

Dina Asher-Smith revealed she was "absolutely terrified" beforehand, adding "when that gun was going, I was like, 'Dina, just relax'.

"When I gave that baton to Zharnel [Hughes] I was so happy. I can't lie. I was like 'get this out of my hand'."

Jeremiah Azu said the British team is "super strong in sprinting, and we wanted to showcase that for the British fans.

"Amy [Hunt] is on the rise. What she has done at these championships is incredible."

'Are you not entertained?'

Hughes: "We have never done this before. It was incredible. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Are you not entertained?"

Hunter Bell finished well ahead of the field in the 1500m final, winning in a time of just under four minutes, eight seconds on the last day of competition at Alexander Stadium.

Jazmin Sawyers took the silver medal in the long jump and another silver arrived in the women's 4x400m relay, won by the Netherlands.

Great Britain's men's 4x400m team narrowly lost out to Italy, who pipped Great Britain to first place in the final medals table, with 10 golds, to the home team's nine overall.
