Obituary: Tom Youngs

Everyone at Bury Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Tom Youngs at the very young age of 45.  Tom died yesterday, Sunday 4th May, having been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis back in 2014.

Tom was an East Anglian man, born in Bury St Edmunds and began his career with a successful six-year spell at Cambridge United, where he played 150 league games, scoring 43 goals.   Such form brought a £50,000 transfer to Northampton Town in March 2003 and after three years at Sixfields, he moved on again, to Leyton Orient in January 2005.

After just six months in London, Tom moved north to join Graham Barrow’s Shakers in July 2005 and played 49 league games for the Shakers, scoring seven goals, over the next two years.  Tom was studying sports journalist at the University of Staffordshire during his time at Gigg Lane and ended up joining Stafford Rangers when his time at Bury ended in 2007.

He subsequently played for Cambridge City, St Albans City, Norwich United and Mildenhall Town.

Our sincere condolences are sent to Tom’s wife Chelle and their two daughters, and to his extended family.
