A new indoor padel facility will be built inside an industrial unit in Rochdale. The plan for 10 padel courts, reception, café and shower facilities has been approved by the local authority.
All the courts would be built within an empty industrial unit at Belfield Hall Farm, just off Albert Royds Street. Eight of the courts would be for doubles and two would be singles courts.
This application from Apex Padel Clubs is the latest in a long line of schemes across Greater Manchester in what is fast-becoming a padel craze.
Padel is commonly described as a mix of racquet sports tennis and squash. Played in pairs, the rapidly growing sport is played on an enclosed court roughly a third the size of a tennis court.
Padel features underarm serves, wall rebounds, and padded rackets that make it remarkably easy to pick up, even for beginners. The sport has taken the city-region by storm, with a huge number of panel courts being erected in recent years.
Planning papers read: “The proposal seeks to bring a vacant industrial building back into active use, providing much-needed indoor sports provision in the Rochdale area. There is currently no indoor provision for padel sports in the area and there is a high demand given it’s the fastest growing sport in the UK.
“Bringing this service will be a valuable asset to the community.”
The proposed hours of operation for the padel facility are Monday to Sunday, from 6am to midnight. The courts would need to be booked in advance by punters, with slots of 60 minutes and 90 minutes available.
The adjoining industrial unit to the east is currently occupied by Littleborough Carpets, with the Go Local Extra store sitting just next door. Outside, the site will accommodate 28 car parking spaces.
