Football to return to Gigg Lane as fans in Bury vote in favour of merger

Football fans in the town of Bury have voted in favour of a merger between Bury FC Supporters Society & Bury AFC.

Results were announced at extraordinary general meetings of both societies this evening. 

952 (90.1%) members of the Bury FC Supporters Society voted in favour, with 105 (9.9%) voting against. 

As for the Shakers Community Society, 1109 voted in favour, 35 against and 15 abstentions.

Bury AFC's Shakers Community Board chair Phil Young gives his reaction: 

A joint statement between Bury Council leader Cllr Eamonn O'Brien, and cabinet member Charlotte Morris, described today's events. 

“This a tremendous result for football, for unity and for the whole community, the statement reads.

“Bringing elite men’s football back to its spiritual home at Gigg Lane has been a dream of many thousands of sports fans across the borough.

“The dream can now become a reality."
