An Independent candidate has won the by-election for the central Bolton ward of Rumworth.

An Independent candidate has won the by-election for the central Bolton ward of Rumworth.

The election, for a single seat on the council, was won by Yusuf Davda who polled 1,458 votes.

Labour’s Sajid Pathan came second with 1,054 with Alan Johnson for the Green Party in the third with the support of 579.

The by-election was triggered by Labour councillor Abdul Atcha’s announcement last month that he was stepping down from the role after four years.

Coun Davda said he was ‘delighted’ to have won thanked his supporters for their ‘hard work’ during the campaign.

Asked what his priorities were he said: “Road safety and speeding is a massive issue in Rumworth and I’ll be working to address that.

“The people in the ward are also concerned about crime and anti-social behaviour.

“I will work with other councillors to address these issues.”

In elections on May 7 this year the Greens won the Rumworth ward, with its candidate Ismail Ibrahim polling 2,346 votes.

Labour were second with 1,659 with Reform UK in third, polling 463.

Previously, the Rumworth ward was seen as a relatively safe seat for Labour.

The result has an effect on the larger political make up of the council with Labour seeing the party’s representation at the town hall fall.

Labour, who have minority control of the authority, remains the biggest political group on the council, with 19 councillors. Both Reform and the Tories still have 10 members each and are both official opposition groups.

The Liberal Democrats and Horwich & Blackrod First have five seats at the town hall, while the Greens have four. Farnworth & Kearsley First have three members and there are four Independents.

Here is the full result for the Rumworth by-election:

Yusuf Davda (IND) -1,458
Wendy Ann Hopkinson (IND) – 45
Alan Johnson (GREEN) – 517
Marcellus Mbah (CON) – 60
Ghansham Hirgi Patel (REFORM) – 279
Sajid Pathan (LAB) – 1,054
Gillian Elizabeth Wroe (LIB/DEM) – 37
