The products that increased in price most since 2021 - and the (surprising) ones now a lot cheaper

Inflation has risen by 28% cumulatively since the cost-of-living crisis began, according to new figures.

The worst offending products and services have been revealed in research by investment platform AJ Bell.

Olive oil, mortgage interest and offal are some of the products that saw the greatest price rises, at 116%, 152% and 76% respectively.

"When we dig into the basket of goods that makes up the CPI index, just 14 of the 192 categories are cheaper now than in July 2021 - signalling just how widespread the cost rises have been," says Laura Suter, director of personal finance at AJ Bell.

"Olive oil is the biggest offender, having increased in price by a whopping 116% in five years."

That's thanks to a combination of poor harvests and higher energy costs - meaning the summer of drought across Europe does not bode well for the future of this price tag.

Another big riser was car insurance, rocketing 72%.

"There was an immediate spike after COVID, as a shortage of parts made cars more valuable and parts more expensive," explains Suter. Add to that an increase in car thefts and repair costs as technology advances.

Speaking of technology, it dominates the list of prices that have fallen.

Computers are down 25% and TVs down 30%.

But Suter cautions: "There's likely also a quirk in how the ONS figures are collected, as they try to normalise prices to factor in technological advances."
