Facebook co-founder Saverin invited to join bid for Liverpool FC stake

Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook, is among the billionaires who have been approached to join the consortium plotting to acquire a stake in Liverpool Football Club.

Sky News has learnt that Mr Saverin, whose wealth is estimated at $32.4bn (£24.3bn) by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, was contacted several weeks ago as part of efforts to build a syndicate which could become the Anfield club's second-largest shareholder.

Mr Saverin, who is 44 years old, was part of a consortium which assembled an unsuccessful takeover bid for Chelsea FC during the 2022 auction triggered by Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Alongside Mark Zuckerberg and several others, he launched Facebook in 2004, setting it on the path to becoming part of the $1.5trn technology behemoth Meta Platforms.

Mr Saverin now jointly runs B Capital Group, a US-based venture capital group which has backed dozens of AI, healthcare and financial start-ups.

If he does formally join the bid for a significant minority stake in Liverpool, Mr Saverin's co-investors may include Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder whose talks about an involvement in the deal were revealed by Sky News last week.

However, the status of any current discussions involving Mr Saverin was unclear this weekend, and sources cautioned that he might not ultimately be part of the investor group.

Emails to B Capital and its media representatives did not receive a response on Sunday, while a spokesperson for the consortium declined to comment on Mr Saverin's prospective involvement.

The syndicate is being led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.

Other parties are also understood to be involved in the deal.

The deal involving Liverpool could see roughly 30% of the club sold by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which has been in control at Anfield since 2010.

A transaction could value The Reds, who last won the Premier League title in 2024-25, at more than $6bn, underlining the huge financial success that FSG has enjoyed during its 16 years as the club's owner.

At that level, it would rank among the richest deals in English football history, with only transactions involving Chelsea and Manchester United being broadly comparable.

It remains unclear whether the acquisition of a "strategic minority stake" would pave the way for a long-term change of control at Anfield, although observers have speculated for years that FSG would seek an outright sale at some point.

A spokesperson for FSG said last week: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

The last time a stake in the club changed hands was in 2023, when Dynasty Equity bought a small interest valuing Liverpool at more than $4.5bn.

FSG, controlled by John Henry, also owns the Boston Red Sox baseball team as well as other sporting interests.

Since taking over, FSG has largely been praised by Liverpool fans for its stewardship of the club, although last season's fifth-place finish and the decision to sack head coach Arne Slot in May caused disquiet among many.

The forthcoming 2026-27 season will see Liverpool facing up to life without talismanic striker Mo Salah for the first time in nearly a decade, and with a new head coach in the form of Andoni Iraola, the former AFC Bournemouth boss.

Talks about the sale of a stake in the club also come as the Premier League tries to secure approval from its shareholders to put a financial redistribution deal worth about £1.5bn to the English Football League.

A vote among the 20 Premier League clubs could take place as soon as this Thursday, Sky News reported this weekend.
