Boxer loses hairpiece in the ring and blames mother's shampoo

American boxer Jarrell Miller won his heavyweight bout in New York by a hair's breadth on Saturday - but lost his wig when the toupee started to came away.

The American's hairpiece came loose at the front after taking a flurry of punches from opponent Kingsley Ibeh during their clash at Maddison Square Garden.

Noticing it had been dislodged at the end of a round, the 37-year-old smiled and threw it into the crowd.

Despite losing the hair the boxer managed to keep his head and clinch victory by a split decision.

Bizarrely, the boxer claimed that his hair had burned off after shampooing with bleach and he had to get an emergency toupee.

Speaking about what had happened in his post-fight interview, Miller said: "I get to my mama's house and she has some shampoo bottles on the table.

"I shampooed, it was like ammonium bleach. I literally lost my hair like two days ago.

"So I called my manager (and said), 'get me one of those manes', and I slapped that on real quick... I'm a comedian, I make fun of myself."

The bout was on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson's WBO super-lightweight title fight, which Stevenson won by unanimous decision.

Miller has a had turbulent relationship with British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. In 2019 he was scheduled to face off with then-champion Anthony Joshua at the same New York venue.

The bout was eventually scrapped because he failed a drug test. His replacement, Andy Ruiz Jr, stepped in instead - leading to one of boxing's greatest ever upsets against Joshua.
