Bury Community Hubs

We provide support and supplies to residents in the Borough of Bury most vulnerable to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
What are the Bury Community Hubs?
Bury Council has set up community hubs to provide support in all our communities. We are working with organised voluntary groups and local volunteers to provide support and arrange delivery of food and medical supplies.
Who can access support?
Anyone living in the Borough of Bury without a support network who meets one or more of the following criteria:
- has received a letter advising them that they are in the most vulnerable group and should be shielded;
- is aged 70 or over and has underlying health conditions;
- is otherwise socially or economically vulnerable.
What support is available from the Bury Community Hubs?
During the coronavirus outbreak the network is here to help those who do not have support to source food and medical supplies or access hardship grants.
We’re here to help
Support can be requested from Bury Community Hubs either by completing our online request for help form or by phoning our contact team.
- Contact us online: Open our Request help from Bury Community Hubs online form.
- Contact us by phone: Dial 0161 253 5353 (7 days a week, 9am to 5pm).

British Gas | If you’re in isolation and you think you’ll use up your balance and emergency credit, contact British Gas and it has said it’ll find a solution on a case-by-case basis. Right now, our immediate focus is on helping those non-smart prepayment customers we’ve identified as medically vulnerable. We’re contacting these customers directly to let them know how we can support them over the weeks ahead.If you’re unable to top-up yourself for any reason, please think first about asking a friend, family member or a trusted neighbour to top-up for you. Asking someone to top-up for you is absolutely fine and one of the fastest and safest ways to top-up at the moment. If you can, it’s also a good idea to top up your meter with a bit more than you usually would.Our call centre teams are only dealing with emergencies right now, but if you’re unable to top-up yourself and you haven’t got anyone to help you, please call 0330 100 0303 Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. We can help – but please understand that we’ve asked our teams to check that it’s an emergency first. | 0333 202 9802 |
EDF | EDF has advised people who self-isolate to ask friends and family to help you top up. Where this is not possible, it says it can deliver ‘preloaded’ cards and keys if you need to self-isolate – this balance will then be collected back at a “suitable rate” later.If you’re self-isolating, where possible arrange for a friend/family member to top-up your key or card for you, if it is safe to do so. If this is not possible, please call our dedicated Prepayment line on 0333 200 5110 and our team will support you.We also operate a friendly, non-disconnection policy on most meters. So if you run out of credit after 6pm your electricity will not go off until 9am the next day. This operates from 6pm to 9am Monday to Friday, 6pm on Saturday and any time on a Sunday or Bank Holiday, until 9am the next day.For many years we have allocated money to a ‘hardship fund’ for those customers most in need. In the light of the current crisis, we will use those funds specifically for our prepayment customers who are struggling to keep their meters charged. If you’re at risk of losing your energy supply, please call our dedicated Prepayment line on 0333 200 5110 and our team will support you to maintain supply.Because of the current situation we’ve had to make a decision not to install smart meters. Our installer will now support customers in emergency situations, with many more volunteering to go further, delivering food and medicine to those who can’t leave their homes. Our priority are emergencies and we’re working on a process to deliver essentials. | 0333 200 5100 |
EON | E.on says it can post top-up cards or keys loaded with credit to your home or send an engineer to top up your meter.It says if your electricity meter falls below 50p of emergency credit, or you’re off supply for gas, it can either send a card or key in the post, or it will send an engineer round to top up for you. However, it advises to top up a little extra or asking a trusted person to help in order to prepare for self-isolation. In order to ensure customers with prepayment meters stay on supply, we’re urging you to get support from friends and family as needed to ensure your meter will be topped up if you have to self-isolate. Trusted friends or relatives are able to top up prepayment customers’ meters on your behalf, as needed.Whilst your energy costs will need to be repaid, in order to help in an emergency situation in the case of self-isolation, we have extended emergency credit levels for customers with classic prepayment meters from £5 to £50. It is important to note that this credit will need to be paid back in order to reinstate customers’ energy supply if this emergency credit runs out. In order to activate the extended emergency credit, customers will need to visit their local top up store up to three times in advance, see below for more information. If customers are self-isolating, trusted friends or relatives can also top up on their behalf.We are working to take similar steps for electricity customers with classic prepayment meters and we will announce more on this when we can. | 0345 052 000 |
Npower | If you’re self-isolating or about to start self-isolating you should ask a friend, neighbour, or family member to top up your meter on your behalf and just leave the key or card on the doorstep, so you don’t have to come into contact with each other.Remember to clean and disinfect objects you touch regularly – including your card – to reduce the risk of passing on the infection to other people. Please don’t soak your card in liquid as this is likely to damage it and stop it working. Regularly wash your hands for 20 seconds using soap and hot water, or use hand sanitiser if that’s all you have access to. | 0800 073 3000 |
Scottish Power | Scottish Power has advised people who need to self-isolate to ask a friend, neighbour or family member to top up for them, and to add more credit to your meter than normal. | 0800 027 0072 |
SSE | We encourage you to keep at least 14 days’ worth of credit on your meter in case you need to self-isolate.If you’re not able to do this, please ask family members or friends if they can help you. You should dis-infect your top-up card before handing it to anyone else and when you get it back. If you’re unable to ask friends and family, please call us and we’ll help by taking payment over the phone and arranging for an engineer to deliver your credit on a key or card.If you don’t have any funds to top up your meter, we can offer you a temporary credit or reduce any payments you’re making through your meter so your credit lasts longer. You can call us on 0345 072 9495 (Monday to Friday: 8am-8pm; Saturdays, 9am-6pm; Sundays, 9am-5pm). Our call centre will be busier than usual but please bear with us. Once you’re through we’ll review your situation and talk you through the options.Remember – most meters have either an emergency credit or friendly credit facility if you’re temporarily unable to buy credit. | 0345 026 2658 |
Bulb | Bulb says it can post top-up cards or keys loaded with credit to your home.
Bulb has advised people who self-isolate to ask friends and family to help you top up. Where this is not possible, it says you can pay online and a preloaded card will be delivered. |

Netflix | The COVID-19 crisis has meant that thousands of our customer support agents are unable to work, or are now having to work from home. So our wait times are higher than normal. We’re working hard to provide the best support we can under the circumstances, and apologize for the delays you are experiencing. We’re now offering live chat and online Help Center support only globally. Shifting to chat instead of phone support allows our agents to help more people while working from home. We know this is less convenient for some members, but we will be able to help more people more quickly this way. Given the shortage of agents, we’re also having to reduce our support hours. This will vary depending on the country you’re in – and as we experiment with what works best given the current crisis. | 0800 096 8879 |

Talk Talk | TalkTalk Covid-19 Update: We are doing everything we can to keep our customers connected, so you may experience some delays in calling us and booking an engineer appointment. It’s much faster to order online and you may not need an engineer appointment. We have temporarily limited our call centre availability in line with government advice on keeping our colleagues safe during this time. How are home visits affected?
In light of the Government’s latest measures, Openreach will now only prioritise essential maintenance and repair works to minimise engineer visits. As a result, some customers who require an engineer visit to install TalkTalk broadband will have their appointments postponed. Vulnerable customers will be prioritised and we’re working to ensure affected customers are aware of alternative options. Most customers looking to switch to TalkTalk will not be impacted. Our team is still available via our online channels as normal but we’ll be focusing our telephone resource on helping customers registered as vulnerable, for many of whom their phone and broadband is their lifeline. Our 24/7 Service Centre is the easiest and quickest way for you to manage your connection online. Alternatively, if your question still needs answering, visit our community forum for advice and support. |
